When Bringham Young said ‘you educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation,‘ he never mentioned a woman’s age. If there’s a will to learn, a woman can gain as much knowledge she can at 16, at 60, if she decides to.

The school, Aajibaichi Shala, was started on the occasion of International Women’s Day and is the first school for grandmothers. Like other schools, this school too has set a certain age limit for its students. To get enrolled here, a woman must have completed at least 60 years of age. Located in Phangane village of the Thane district, Maharashtra, the school has a total of 28 students and their ages range from 60 – 90 years. The school is open for 2 hours every day from 4 – 6 pm and these grandmothers attend classes with much enthusiasm.
