US space society award for ISRO

Indian Space Research Organisation has been conferred 'Space Pioneer Award' by the National Space Society (NSS) of the United States for successfully sending MoM to Martian atmosphere in its very first attempt.

The award would be presented to an ISRO representative during the 34th Annual International Space Development Conference to be held at Toronto in Canada between May 20 and 24, it said.

This Mars mission has achieved two significant mission firstly-

(1) An Indian spacecraft has gone into orbit around Mars on the very first try. No other country has ever done this.

(2) The spacecraft is in an elliptical orbit with a high apoapsis, and has a high resolution camera which is taking full-disk colour imagery of Mars.

ISRO had on November 5, 2013, launched the Mars Orbiter mission from Sriharikota at a cost of Rs 450 crore, which successfully entered the Martian atmosphere on September 24 last year, scripting history of being the first country in the world to have succeeded the mission in its very first attempt.
