112: A pan India emergency helpline No. launched

Single emergency helpline number '112' is joined by 16 states and UTs. It will provide immediate assistance to anyone in distress. It is an integration of police (100), fire (101) and women (1090) helpline numbers. The health helpline (108) will be integrated with 112 soon.The emergency number will gradually be extended to other states as well.The '112' helpline is launched under the the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS).
The emergency number 112 is on the lines of "911' - the all-in-one emergency number in the U.S. and 112 of EU.
At present, in most of the countries, 112 is a part of the GSM standard and all GSM-compatible telephone handsets are able to dial 112 even when locked or with no SIM card present.

 

"112 India" mobile app:

A "112 India" mobile app is launched by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Google Playstore and Apple store. For women and children, "112 India" mobile app would provide a special ''SHOUT'' feature which alerts registered volunteers in the vicinity of the victim for immediate assistance.

Participating States/UTs
The 16 states and UTs are Andhra Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Andaman, Dadar and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Jammu and Kashmir.
