US, Cuba to reopen embassies after 54 years

The United states and Cuba will reopen embassies in their respective capitals to restore diplomatic relations between the two countries. For the first time since 1961, the Cuban red, white and blue flag will fly over Havana's newly upgraded embassy in Washington.

While the US embassy in Havana will also be automatically reopened, no American flag will fly there until Kerry visits to preside over a ceremony.The re-establishing of embassies is a final step in the full diplomatic thaw President Obama initiated in December 2014. Since then, the US has eased some travel restrictions to Cuba and allowed for some new economic ties.
