The Cabinet committee on security (CCS) approved Project-17A

Responding to the "critical necessity" for India to boost its "overall deterrence capability" in the entire Indian Ocean Region (IOR) the Union Government on 18 February 2015 approved Project-17A. The project is aimed at building country's most advanced warships. Under the Project-17A seven frigates of the over Rs 50,000 crore cost will be indigenously constructed. Out of them four will be constructed at Mazagon Docks in Mumbai and three in Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata.

This Project 17-A was awaiting cabinet clearance since 2012. The project is very significanct in combating the rising role of Chinese Navy.
