World Water Day: A day for water and water for SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
World Water Day is marked on 22 March every year. It’s a day to make a difference for the members of the global population who suffer from water related issues. It is also observed to preserve and ration consumption of water. The theme for this year WWD is ‘Water and Sustainable Development’. It’s about how water links to all areas we need to consider to create the future we want. Water is at the core of sustainable development. Water resources, and the range of services they provide, underpin poverty reduction, economic growth and environmental sustainability. From food and energy security to human and environmental health, water contributes to improvements in social well-being and inclusive growth, affecting the livelihoods of billions.
In 1992, this day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as the first World Water Day.Since then this day is observed annually to draw attention on the importance of freshwater and advocating for the sustainable management of fresh water resources.
It is United Nations inter-agency coordination mechanism for freshwater and sanitation. For World Water Day, UN-Water identifies upcoming challenges and sets the theme for the years to come. World Water Day 2016 will be around ‘Water and Jobs’, in 2017 around ‘Wastewater’ and in 2018 around ‘Nature-based Solutions for Water’.
