Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY) MGNREGA

Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojana (PMKSY)

In India only around 45 % area is irrigated. The Government has initiated the “Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana” to ensure the irrigation to the 65% rain-fed farming areas. Rs.1,000 crores is being set aside for this scheme in the current financial year. This scheme is very important in the light of the fact that the productivity of the rainfed land is marginalised at 1.1 tons per hectare whereas that of the irrigated land is 4 tons. This can prove to be a game-changer and make farming economically viable.

Under this scheme:

  • Provide assured irrigation to mitigate risk to the farmer since bulk of the farm lands are rainfed and depend on monsoon. A sum of Rs.1, 000 crores is being set aside.
  • Government aims to provide Soil Health Card to farmers to know the production capability of soil & its suitability for various crops.
  • At macro level, river interlinking project is to taken up with an approach of comprehensive mapping & identification of water bodies.
  • Satellite imagery and 3D photography could be used to guide villages to best possible sources of irrigation.
  • Rivers will be inter-linked to avoid situations of drought and floods.
  • Farmers will be issued a Soli Health Card which will help them know the productivity of their land the crops it can grow best.
  • Krishi Vigyan Kendras or agriculture science centres would also be strengthened in all the districts of the country so that they could come to the aid of farmers

with the recent announcement of PM by integerating MGNREGA ans PMKSY will bring lime light. The govt decision to merge this scheme with MGNREGA is an affirmative move towards its agenda of good governance. The benefits of this will be:-

  1. Both schemes target the same location and population. Such schemes should be merged to maximize its benefits and accelerate their implementation.
  2. The fund of PMKSY will also serve the purpose of MGNREGA. Thus despite cutting funds from MGNREGA, adequate funding can be made available for it.
  3. Integration of schemes with MGNREGA will help in creating more number of meaningful jobs for rural population through MGNREGA.
  4. Employment would automatically be for more than 100 days
  5. Since most of the MNREGA workers are farmers or their families, the quality of work will also be high since it will finally be serving their own community
  6. Government expenditure in one scheme will become an investment for the other, therefore helping in fiscal consolidation.
