• Smart City Initiative:

 

• It is an innovative programme under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs of the Government of India that aims to boost economic growth and improve people's quality of life by facilitating local development and utilising technology to produce smart outcomes for citizens.

 

• Goal:

 

• To encourage cities that provide basic infrastructure and provide a decent quality of life for their residents, as well as a clean and sustainable environment and Smart Solutions implementation.

 

• Focus:

 

• Create a replicable model that will operate as a lighthouse for other aspiring cities, with a focus on sustainable and equitable development and a focus on compact regions.

 

• Strategy:

 

• A pan-city programme involving the implementation of at least one Smart Solution across the city.

 

• Coverage and Duration:

 

• The Mission will operate in 100 cities for five years, beginning in the fiscal year (FY) 2015-16 and ending in the fiscal year (FY) 2019-20.
• It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme in terms of funding.

 

 

• About the India Smart Cities Awards 2020:

 

• They have been released by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to mark the six-year anniversary of the central government's three urban development initiatives:

 

• Smart Cities Mission (SCM)
• Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Transformation (Atal Mission for Urban Rejuvenation and Transformation (AMRUT).
• Urban Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-U).

 

• The performance of various states and cities is as follows:

 

• Among all states, Uttar Pradesh came out on top, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
• The prize was given jointly to Indore (Madhya Pradesh) and Surat (Gujarat) for their overall progress.
• The 'Smart Cities Leadership Award' went to Ahmedabad, while the 'Union Territory Award' went to Chandigarh, and the "Innovative Idea Award" went to Indore.

 

• The following are the criteria that were utilised to rate the states/cities:

 

• The government based their rankings on a number of factors, including social characteristics, governance, culture, urban environment, sanitation, economy, built environment, water, and urban mobility.
• Additional criteria for the awards included a viable business model for Integrated Command and Control Centres and innovation in Covid-19 management for the pandemic year.
