- On this day 552 years ago, Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the first of the ten Sikh gurus, was born.
- Guru Nanak is a Sikh guru who was born in Punjab, India (1469-1538 AD)
- Biography of Guru Nanak Dev:
- Guru Nanak Dev (1469-1539) was born in Talwandi Rai Bhoe, a village near Lahore (it was renamed later as Nankana Sahib).
- He pioneered interfaith contact in the 16th century, meeting with most of the religious denominations of the time.
- The fifth Sikh Guru Arjan Dev's literary writings are included in the Adi Granth (1563-1606).
- It is known as Guru Granth Sahib after the additions made by the 10th guru Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708).
- Guru Nanak's Teachings:
- Universal Peace and Harmony Guru Nanak was a strong supporter of equality.
- He aimed to create a casteless, hierarchical society.
- He was unconcerned by caste, creed, religion, or language distinctions or many identities.
- "Caste is absurd, and birth distinction is stupid," he had declared. The Lord is a safe haven for all creatures."
